Strong John Thomson Elementary School serves approximately four hundred students from pre-k to 6th grade under the leadership of Dr. Gladys Camp. In 2005, Thomson became the first DCPS school to offer Chinese language instruction to students as part of their daily instruction. Chinese language and cultural instruction have allowed Thomson Elementary to become candidates for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB- PYP). IB-PYP focuses on the total growth of the developing child, encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development.

Thomson has exceptionally strong parental involvement. As an example, a group of parents functions as a development committee, seeking private funding to enhance the school is learning environment. In addition to the strong parent engagement, Thomson has a reading teacher who also acts as the school’s data expert supporting staff with analysis and data driven instructional planning.
